There Is No Other

1 Kings 8:60 “…so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.”

I realize the belief that all roads lead to God has been around for quite some time now. But lately it just seems prominent. Where before people thought it was crazy to believe in God, now it’s normal, only instead of it being one path, it’s many. Or, whatever ‘God’ you worship is okay, even if that god is yourself.

But the verse listed above is what I would love to see again. When whole nations come together to worship Jesus and take joy in His Presence alone. Because He’s worthy of it. He’s the best. He’s ridiculously good. In both the Old and New Testaments God showed up in ways that made it undeniable that He alone is God. And when it was so proven people couldn’t deny it, those threatened by it just killed those believing in Him.

All this to say, I am excited for God to start showing up in such a way ‘so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.” It seems like it’s been starting in little pockets here and there and is beginning to spread. I love it. But I was thinking about the verses surrounding this statement- they come just after King Solomon has completed the temple and is part of the dedication of the temple. He is addressing the Israelite assembly.

” Praise be to the Lord, who has given rest to his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses. May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our fathers; may he never leave us nor forsake us. May he turn our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep the commands, decrees and regulations he gave our fathers. And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, so that all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other. But your hearts must be fully committed to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commandments at this time.”

Throughout history God shows up when the people who He loves commit themselves fully to Him. They live for only Him. They live to see Him honored, not only in a big gathering but in their everyday lives.

For a long time it seems the majority of the church hasn’t been living this way at all. Some have, and you can see it by the way God shows up and people surrounding them come to know Him. But now it seems like we’ve all been catching on. We want to see that in our own lives and not just for a select few. Which is perfect, because that’s the way God designed it. Can you imagine how awesome things are about to get? When all of us have finally decided to give everything? It seems like pretty quickly people would realize ‘the Lord is God and there is no other,” and even be excited about that fact. Because when we see the awesome stuff He does, why would you WANT a lesser path? All the self help and spirituality fades quickly when you’re in His Presence. He’s the only one that satisfies.

The other day I was reading a blog. Somewhere in this blog the author wrote, “The voice of God thunders.” They were saying that sometimes we try too hard to find this still place to hear God and forget to look for Him everywhere else.  I can’t remember which blog it was or who said it, but I wish I could! Anyway, this statement has been resonating with me for a few days now.

“The voice of God thunders.”

It’s speaking to my heart right where I need it right now. You see, I’ve always been afraid I will somehow miss God. I think, “What if there’s this really important thing I’m supposed to do that would change everything and I just miss it?” And though He has been easing this fear as time goes on, it’s still been there.Because sometimes I do miss God, and realize it after I’m away from whatever situation I was in. Maybe these misses were a big deal. Or maybe it was God’s way of teaching me to hear the thunder and recognize it for what it is.  So I was thinking about this statement, which of course lead me to think about thunder. And I realized thunder doesn’t often just sound like one big noise. It sounds like one big noise followed by more big noises and they eventually quiet down. Especially during a really good storm where you get some good rolling thunder (THE BEST!). In other words, there’s the initial noise and then a bunch of echoes.

So here’s what He made me realize. He speaks repeatedly. Just like thunder, He speaks, and then He repeats Himself to us and He speaks again. And if you’re paying attention, you’ll hear it. Just like how sometimes thunder sounds like it’s coming from every direction instead of just one, you’ll hear Him say things to you in several ways. And then it all comes together and you start to realize, “Wait! God’s got a theme going on here!” And then you don’t miss God. Because He’s gone out of His way to make Himself and His will known to you.

And then when the type of “thunder” comes where it’s a quick lightning bolt with one loud crash, or maybe even a quieter one, you’ll recognize it. And you won’t miss God.  You’ll even learn to recognize when the thunder is coming. You’ll be able to feel it in the air. And even if you missed Him on something before, you’re being trained to hear the thunder when it’s still a long way off. And when the time comes to put what He’s speaking into action, you’ll know.
